Istituti Paritari Plateja Maritain, Associazione Culturale Scuola 3.0, Taranto

School program: 4 curricula (Social services, Technology, Business, Sport and sciences Liceo)
School level: high school (students’ age: 14-19)
Our school provides a library with scientific, technical and literary texts (in Italian, English, French and Spanish).
Our students and teachers come from Taranto and from several parts of our region. Our students have different backgrounds. The majority of them come from normal families, which support them as students and adolescents. A number of students live in mono-parental and disorganized families, which affects their mood and their profit at school. There are few cases of adopted children, pupils coming from abroad, other cities or disadvantages families. Therefore one of the most important goals of our school is to integrate these children and to create an educational community where everybody can improve in many different fields.

We observed that an increasing number of students seem to lose interest in learning during the early years of high school. Most of them find that studying too much theory is boring, probably because they prefer spending their time on technological devices and on social networks. For this reason, our professional teachers are engaged in creating more practical and interactive lessons based on scientific experiments, technical craft and teamwork activities. However, our teachers struggle with this need to integrate further activities because they are already very busy in teaching the national program’s topics, which are often based on very theoretical studies. This happens because the Italian education system has always promoted theoretical knowledge and this leads to the negligence of the practical side of learning.
We join this project because we believe that it enhances our teacher’s objectives to counteract this tendency of doing frontal lessons and to offer more involving literature classes to our students. We are sure that, as a result, our pupils will feel closer to the major authors of our society but also to their own feelings and beliefs.
